Chinese president plans to attend Sochi Olympics opening ceremony

This is the first time the Chinese leader will attend such a major international sport event in another country

BEIJING, January 20, 23:44 /ITAR-TASS/. Chinese President Xi Jinping intends to attend the opening ceremony of the Olympic Winter Games in the Russian Black Sea resort city of Sochi on February 7, the Foreign Ministry said on Monday, January 20.

“President of China Xi Jinping will visit the city of Sochi February 6-8 and will attend the Olympic Winter Games 2014 opening ceremony,” the ministry said.

This is the first time the Chinese leader will attend such a major international sport event in another country, he added.

Xi’s presence at the Sochi Games opening ceremony will demonstrate China’s support for the Olympic movement and its appreciation of the enormous work done by Russia to prepare the Games, the ministry said.
