Number of emergencies, fatalities halve in Russia's New Year holidays in 2014

Over 12,000 people were saved in fires and road accidents during the holidays

MOSCOW, January 09. /ITAR-TASS/. The number of emergency situations in Russia, the fatalities in them halved, the number of fires also reduced during the New Year holidays year-on-year, Russian Minister of Emergency Situations Vladimir Puchkov said on Thursday.

“Controlling bodies and emergency forces of the ministry have fulfilled all the tasks jointly with federal structures and regions. Thanks to our efforts the number of emergency situations and their fatalities have more than halved,” the minister said at a telecom conference.

In his words, the number of fires reduced by 11% and the number of fatalities in them has shrunk by one third.

“Over 12,000 people were saved in fires and road accidents during the holidays. This was a very serious job. I would like to thank the emergencies ministry’s controlling bodies and staff, who fulfilled the task to ensure safety of people,” Puchkov said.
