KIROV, January 05, 15:50 /ITAR-TASS/. The Olympic flame arrived on Sunday in Kirov, a city 900 kilometers east of Moscow. Kirov Region Governor Nikita Belykh was the first to carry the Olympic flame.
The governor said the city was for the first time receiving the Olympic flame. “Our city has all necessary resources for that as well as an experience of hosting international sports competitions of the highest level,” he said.
The Olympic flame arrived in the city on a special train from Perm at 10:20 Moscow time. A total of 160 torchbearers take turns to carry the flame across the city, assisted by about 360 volunteers. Among the participants in the Kirov stage of the Olympic torch relay are multiple world champion and champion of Russia in Russian bandy Sergei Obukhov, power lifting champion and world record holder Andrei Belyaev, world champion in ice climbing Alexei Tomilov, skier Vladislav Skobelev as well as director general of a Kirov plant Nikolai Kuragin.
Head of the department for youth affairs, physical culture and sports of the Kirov city administration Nadezhda Anisimova said the Kirov stage of the Olympic torch relay stretched at 30.5 kilometres. The distance of each Olympic torchbearer made an average of 200 metres, she said.
All main festive events devoted to the Olympic Flame relay, including fashion shows, theatrical performances, performances of dance and music companies will be staged on central Theatralnaya Square. The Olympic Flame will be lit up in the Kirov Olympic cauldron on Sunday evening.
