Russian figure-skating star Plushenko says will not take part in European championships

Plushenko also said that he would take only in the team skating contest in the Olympic Games

SOCHI, December 25, 21:03 /ITAR-TASS/. Russia’s renowned figure skater Yevgeny Plushenko will not take part in the European Championships in Budapest in January.

Plushenko, 31, revealed the information to reporters after completing a free skate at the Russian national championship in Sochi, in which he won the silver medal, ceding gold to Maksim Kovtun.

The Russian figure skating team for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games will be formed upon the results of the European Championships.

Plushenko also said that he would take only in the team skating contest in the Games.

“Yevgeny’s decision didn’t catch his team by surprise in any way because the talk that he might miss the championship in Budapest had been around for quite some time, and we should honor the athletes’ decisions,” said David Avdysh, a choreographer working for the Russian national team.
