BERLIN, December 19 (Itar-Tass) - Germany's Federal Minister of the Interior, Thomas de Maizire, will act as his country's political representative in the Winter Olympics in Sochi, the ministry’s spokesperson said in Berlin Thursday.
The trip’s details would be known in January 2014. The Minister of the Interior, who is traditionally in charge of sport issues, is planning to visit the competitions to support German athletes, the spokesperson added.
Thomas de Maizire was appointed Minister of Interior on Tuesday after Angela Merkel had been sworn in as German chancellor. Previously, he had worked in Merkel’s Cabinet as Defence Minister.
Earlier, the German president announced he would not go to the Games, without publicly commenting on the decision. The president is planning to welcome the German national team upon its return from Sochi.
