BERLIN, December 17. /ITAR-TASS/. German Olympic champion in discus throwing Robert Harting urged Chancellor Angela Merkel to visit the Winter Olympics in Sochi.

“If (German President Joachim) Gauck does not do this, then Federal Chancellor Merkel should come there,” he said in an interview published on Tuesday by Bild newspaper. “This is simply a manifestation of respect for athletes,” the 29-year-old athlete added.

Earlier it was reported that Merkel, whom the Bundestag will elect on Tuesday as head of government of Germany for the third term, expressed discontent over the German president’s decision not to go to Sochi. As noted by Der Spiegel magazine with reference to retinue of German government’s head, the Chancellor learned about Gauck’s position from media reports.
