Rostelecom completes Sochi Olympics telecom infrastructure

The telecom company is ready to service TV broadcasting and provide state-of-the-art telecom services for organizers, participants and guests of the Olympics

MOSCOW, December 11 (Itar-Tass) - Russian state telecommunication company Rostelecom has completed its infrastructures for the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, the director of the company’s southern branch, Alexander Shipulin told the news conference Wednesday.

“The company has created from scratch a strong telecom infrastructure necessary for the Games and TV broadcasting, as well as state-of-the-art telecom services for organizers, participants and guests of the Olympics,” Shipulin said. He added Rostelecom was the telecom partner of the Games in fixed-line communication and all facilities had been connected to the entirely redundant network to be operating round the clock.

The transport component of the infrastructure includes about 500 kilometers of fiber-optic communication lines linking 35 facilities. The main network’s capacity has been increased to 140 Gbit/sec.

“Thanks to understanding, assistance and support of the organizing Committee ‘Sochi 2014’ we have completed the main work in time and will provide guests and athletes with high-quality service,” Shipulin said.

The Olympic Information Technology Center was the core stage of the project, being the largest IT facility for Sochi Olympics with an area of more than 2,000 square metres. The Center is aimed to process information flows, manage the Games’ united network and integrate special solutions for each sport.

The infrastructure will satisfy the needs of not only Rostelecom and the Organizing Committee, but also the Olympic Broadcasting Service, dozens of right holding companies, special users, owners of hotels, Sochi guests and residents, Rostelecom said.

Over 800 specialists from all over Russia are involved in ‘Sochi 2014’. According to Shipulin, the infrastructure has successfully underwent several-days-long testing in October and December, when real-time actions of each specialist were tested under different scenarios. It was also checked at international test competitions 2012-2013.
