MOSCOW, September 12 (Itar-Tass) - Syria is set to join the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling and Use of Chemical Weapons and on their Destruction in the shortest possible timeframe, Syrian Ambassador to Russia Riyad Haddad told Itar-Tass on Thursday.

“We have fully accepted the Russian initiative (to put Syria’s chemical weapons under international control), this is a very good and great initiative,” he said. “We have fully agreed with it at once. However, it is necessary to negotiate many details. As you know there is the Charter of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and it has its rules. It is necessary to observe them.”

Haddad assured that “Syria was ready to join the Chemical Weapons Convention at once in compliance with requests of friends in Russia. This is purely a technical issue.”
