BRUSSELS, June 24 (Itar-Tass) - Weapons supplies to Syrian rebels are not adequate to end the conflict in Syria, Luxembourg Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn said.

Speaking at a meeting of the EU Council at the level of foreign ministers on Monday, Asselborn said the EU should less think about weapons supplies and it should more think about the Geneva peace conference.

Even if rebels win the victory in Syria, a lasting peace cannot be ensured without the political resolution of the conflict. Clashes and instability can drag on. That is why it is necessary to exert maximum effort jointly with the Russian and American partners in order to hold the peace conference, the Luxembourg foreign minister said.

The EU countries failed to agree to extend the embargo on weapons supplies to Syria. The embargo ceased to effective from June 1. Since every country should take its own decision on weapons supplies to the conflict zone.

At the ministerial meeting the EU is expected to exchange views on the situation in Syria.
