ST PETERSBURG, June 20 (Itar-Tass) - Russian peacekeepers on the Golan Heights could be an excellent variant to ensure security in Syria and Israel where most Russian compatriots live there, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Thursday.
“The deployment of Russian peacekeepers on the Golan Heights will depend on the readiness of the Syrian government and Israel,” the minister said.
He stressed that what was determined in the U.N. mandate of 1974 under which there was agreement to exclude permanent members of the U.N. Security Council from peacekeeping contingents “was in the heat of the Cold War”.
“Now I don’t see any reasons for Russian peacekeepers’ not to be acceptable for Syria and Israel,” Lavrov emphasised.
