Presidential voting starts in Iran

TEHRAN, June 14 (Itar-Tass) - Presidential elections have started in Iran. Thousands of polling stations opened all over the country and abroad on Friday morning.

Citizens of the Islamic Republic are to elect one of the six candidates to be president of the country.

About 60,000 polling stations opened in Iran at 08:00 local time. The voting will last till 18:00 local time.

About 50,500,000 Iranians who have the right to vote may participate in the poll.

Iranian citizens will also have the possibility to vote in 96 countries, where a total of 290 polling stations will be open. An Iranian Foreign Ministry official said earlier that 850,000 ballots were sent to the polling stations abroad.

Iranians will choose one of the six candidates - four conservatives and two representatives of the centre.

Presidential elections are held in Iran every four years. In accordance with the country's Constitution, current President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad may not be a candidate for a third presidential term.
