MOSCOW, December 19 (Itar-Tass) —— State Duma Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Alexei Pushkov called for preserving governability in Syria.

“I think it is important to look at the threat of collapse of government bodies in Syria as it happened in Iraq after the occupation,” he said on Wednesday, December 19. “One can hardly hope that the armed opposition will be able to get the country run and governed properly in a short time as it is engaged in fighting right now.”

“As for the opposition outside Syria, its position remains unclear,” he added.

He believes it necessary to use Iraq’s experience and try to preserve governability in the country by all means,” the MP said.

“Hence the Russian position” the current Syrian government should be a part of settlement. In what form is a different question because there is no other government in Syria now,” Pushkov said.
