MOSCOW, November 28 (Itar-Tass) — Moscow called for an immediate resumption of the Palestinian-Israeli negotiations and for holding a ministerial meeting of the Middle East Quarter.

“It is expected that on November 29, the U.N. General Assembly will vote on the draft resolution submitted by Palestinians on the granting the status of an non-member observer state to Palestine. As has been repeatedly reported, the Russian Federation will vote for this resolution, taking into account our position of principle,” the fm said on Wednesday, November 28.

Support for this decision is also prompted by the fact that “such a step by the Palestinians is not regarded by them – as they have expressly stated in their draft resolution – as an alternative to the peace process in the Middle East”, the ministry said.

“At this point, international and regional efforts should be focused on an immediate resumption of direct Palestinian-Israeli negotiations for the purpose of achieving agreement on a well-known international legal basis on key questions of the final status,” the Foreign Ministry said.

Russia “will continue to assist this vigorously in bilateral contacts, in the United Nations, and within the Middle East Quartet of international mediators, while calling for the soonest possible ministerial meeting of the Quartet,” the Foreign Ministry said.
