MOSCOW, January 25. /TASS/. Jaysh al-Islam and Ahrar al-Sham groups should cut their ties with Jebhat al-Nusra and Islamic State (IS) terrorist organizations in order to secure participation in the Geneva negotiations on the Syrian settlement, one of the leaders of Syria’s Popular Front for Change and Liberation Qadri Jamil told a press conference on Monday.
"The problem with identifying terrorists persists," Jamil said. "There are disagreements about Jaysh al-Islam and Ahrar al-Sham groups. This is a contentious issue as they cooperate with Jebhat al-Nusra," he added.
"How is it possible to cooperate with forces that work together with Jebhat al-Nusra? The only way out of the dead-end is for all groups to cut all ties with Jebhat al-Nusra and Islamic State and start fighting against them," Jamil noted.
"Those who supports peaceful settlement should not be terrorists. They need to undertake commitments that they have cut all ties with terrorists and will fight against them. It is impermissible for them to sit at the negotiations table and simultaneously work together with Jebhat al-Nusra," he concluded.
On 18 December 2015 the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 2254 in support of the Vienna agreements on the peaceful settlement of the conflict in Syria envisages participation of the Syrian opposition and representatives of government in the talks that are due to start in January 2016. The final goals of negotiations are defined as establishing the transitional government, adopting a constitution and holding election in the next 18 months.
The document does not mention Syrian President Bashar Assad whose future remains the main stumbling block. The resolution states that the Syrian people should decide the future of the country.
