Ukraine may spend over $40 million to reinforce line of engagement in Donbas

Kiev has to spend huge sums to make an unassailable fortress of the engagement line, Valentin Fedichev, a deputy commander of the headquarters of the force operation, was quoted is saying

KIEV, April 8. /TASS/. Fortification of the line of engagement in Donbas may cost the Ukrainian budget one billion hryvnias (about $43 million), a Ukrainian high ranking army officer said on Tuesday.

"Today, Ukraine has to spend huge sums — about one billion hryvnias — to make an unassailable fortress of the engagement line," the Apostrof publication quoted Valentin Fedichev, a deputy commander of the headquarters of the force operation, as saying.

On March 9, Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko said Ukraine was reinforcing the system of defense in its eastern regions. "We are building a strong, deeply echeloned system of fortification structures in the east," he said. The press center of the force operation said it was planned to build two defensive perimeters "to prevent enemy penetration into Ukraine’s territory." According to the press service, it was planned to build about 1,500 kilometers of trenches and communication trenches, more than 8,000 entrenchments for heavy weapons, more than 4,000 bunkers and a 60-kilometre-long fence of passive obstacles.

Deputy Prime Minister Gennady Zubko said the construction of fortification facilities in eastern Ukraine was to be over by mid-May.
