Arab countries agree on setting up common army - communique

The draft communique is expected to be adopted at the summit’s concluding day in Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt on Sunday

CAIRO, March 29. /TASS/. The Arab countries have agreed on establishing a common regional army to jointly counter security threats in the region, according to a draft communique of a summit of the Arab League Nations released on Sunday.

The draft communique is expected to be adopted at the summit’s concluding day in Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt on Sunday.

The communique comes in the wake of the latest developments in Yemen where Houthi rebels have seized control of a considerable part of the country, forcing Yemen's President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi to flee. Saudi Arabia has launched a military operation against Houthi rebels jointly with other Persian Gulf countries.

The draft communique also demands that the Shiite Houthi rebels leave Yemen’s capital of Sana’s, which they have seized, and lay down their arms.

At their summit in Egypt, the Arab nations supported the Saudi-led military operation against the Houthi rebels in Yemen "for restoring law and order" and "the national security of Arab nations.".
