US puts Caucasus Emirate leader on terrorism sanctions list

The US Treasury Department put Aliaskhab Kebekov on its list of Specially Designated Nationals, freezing his assets in the US and prohibiting US citizens from having any financial dealings with him

WASHINGTON, March 25. /TASS/. The United States on Wednesday imposed sanctions on a senior militant of the armed Islamic resistance in Russia’s North Caucasus.

Aliaskhab Kebekov, also known as Ali Abu-Mukhammad, from the constituent region of Dagestan, is the leader of the Caucasus Emirate, a state that Islamist rebels declared in 2007 and that spans several traditionally Islamic territories in North Caucasus.

Russian media said Kebekov was chosen to stand at the head of the Caucasus Emirate last March after the death of former insurgent leader Doku Umarov.

The US Treasury Department put Kebekov on its list of Specially Designated Nationals, freezing his assets in the United States and prohibiting US citizens from having any financial dealings with him.
