Putin sends condolences to Merkel, King Felipe over plane crash in French Alps

MOSCOW, March 24. /TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin has offered his condolences to German Chancellor Angela Merkel and King Felipe VI of Spain following the crash of an Airbus A320 en route from Barcelona to Dusseldorf, the Kremlin press service said on Tuesday.

According to the press service, the Russian leader conveyed the words of condolences and support to the families of those killed in the plane crash.

The plane crashed in mountainous terrain in the department of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, southern France.

Germanwings, Lufthansa's budget airline which operated the flight, said that 150 people, including 144 passengers and six crew, were on board the plane.

Putin said that "Russian shares the grief of those who lost their relatives in this tragedy," the press service reported.

The Russian Emergencies Ministry earlier said it had proposed sending a team of 50 Russian rescuers to the crash site.
