KIEV, March 17. /TASS/. Angry local people were demonstrating in the Ukrainian town of Konstantinovka, the Donetsk Region on Tuesday, following the death of an eight-year-old girl, who was run over and killed by an armored vehicle on a street Monday evening, the 112 Ukraine television channel reports from the site of the event.
A crowd of local residents gathered in the town’s main square to protest the presence of Ukrainian military on the streets and the way they behave. One of the demonstrators’ demands is troops be moved outside the town’s limits and stationed nearby. Some complain Ukrainian troops are often seen drunk. They also argue that the driver of the combat vehicle involved in the road accident that claimed the little girl’s life had been drunk, too.
"About a hundred locals have gathered for the protest rally and more are still coming in. Police patrols are maintaining law and order," the TV channel said.
According to the newscast, the Ukrainian army’s paratroop combat vehicle ran over and killed an eight-year-old girl Monday evening. A woman was hurt. She is now in grave condition. The baby in the carriage the woman was pushing was unharmed.
The Donetsk Region’s police office has said the incident sparked an angry response from the public. Local residents set fire to tires in front of the hostel being used by Ukrainian troops and smashed windows in the building. On the site of the tragedy a group of 30 men overturned a traffic police car. A spontaneous rally followed. Police detained four military involved in the traffic accident and took them to Kramatorsk. The Defense Ministry, according to the TV channel, has promised that the commanders of the soldiers who committed the lethal road accident would be brought to justice.
