Talks of sending peacekeepers to Ukraine frustrate Minsk agreements — Russian MP

This initiative is inappropriate no matter of its content, as it de-facto "washes away" the agreements reached in Minsk, a senior Russian lawmaker Konstantin Kosachev believes

MOSCOW, February 19. /TASS/. A senior Russian lawmaker Konstantin Kosachev said on Thursday it is too early to discuss the plans of deploying peacekeepers to Ukraine and urged the sides to comply with the Minsk peace agreements.

"This initiative is inappropriate no matter of its content, as it de-facto "washes away" the agreements reached in Minsk," said Kosachev, who chairs the foreign affairs committee of Russia’s upper house of parliament, the Federation Council.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said on Wednesday the National Security and Defense Council should consider a possibility of deploying an international peacekeeping force to Ukraine.

The Council, headed by Oleksandr Turchynov, later approved the relevant request for the United Nations and the European Union to send peacekeepers to the Donbas conflict zone.

The speaker of Russia’s lower house of parliament, the State Duma, Sergey Naryshkin said earlier on Thursday that the plans of inviting peacekeepers to Ukraine could disrupt the Minsk agreements, which do not envisage such a measure.
