TBILISI, February 17. /TASS/. Georgia’s Office of the Chief Prosecutor has asked the Prosecutor-General’s Office of Ukraine to extradite Georgia’s former president, Mikheil Saakashvili, to Georgia.

"In Georgia, Saakashvili is facing criminal charges (brought against him in 2014 — TASS). His name is on the domestic most wanted list. The Chief Prosecutor’s Office has asked the Ukrainian Prosecutor’s Office for Saakashvili’s detention in Ukraine and his extradition to Georgia," the message says.

"In defiance of the extradition agreements existing between the two countries (of 1990-2000) the Ukrainian side has refused to cooperate with Georgia over the issue of Saakashvili’s extradition," the document runs.

The statement points out that on the basis of the European Convention of 1957, the Minsk Convention of 1993 and the 1995 bilateral agreement between Georgia and Ukraine the two countries pledged to accept each other’s extradition requests and hand over wanted persons.

Georgia’s former president, Mikheil Saakashvili left Georgia in November 2013, several days before the inauguration of the current head of state, Georgy Margvelashvili. At home, Saakashvili is charged with abusing office, masterminding an armed attack against a legislator, embezzlement of several millions of dollars of government funds.
