Russia bans passenger flights over Libya's Tripoli

The ban on flights over Libya's Tripoli went into force on Tuesday and will remain in force until further notice

MOSCOW, February 4. /TASS/. Russia's air transport agency on Tuesday banned all Russian civilian planes from flying within the Tripoli Flight Information Region (Lybia) for security reasons.

The federal agency Rosaviation said on its website the ban on flights went into force on Tuesday and will remain in force until further notice.

"In connection with information from ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) about existing risks to international civil aviation flight safety... arising from the armed conflict in Libya, civil aircraft have been prohibited from conducting flight operations, including transit flights" in the region, the agency said.

ICAO, a UN agency, issued an urgent warning to members last month about risks to aircraft flying over Libya arising from the continuing armed conflict there.
