Evacuation underway in eastern Ukraine after shelling left over 140 miners trapped

Heavy shelling hit Donetsk on Monday evening leaving half of the city with no electricity

MOSCOW, February 3. /TASS/. Rescue teams are working to evacuate miners trapped in a coal pit that lost power near Ukraine’s eastern city of Donetsk, self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic Defense Ministry spokesman Eduard Basurin said on Tuesday.

The Zasyadko coal mine has been left crippled by the loss of power after heavy shelling hit Donetsk on Monday evening leaving half of the city with no electricity, Basurin said.

"More than 140 mineworkers have been left stranded underground. Evacuation is still underway. There are some difficulties," he said, adding that people are being evacuated through an escape shaft.
