UNITED NATIONS, January 26. /TASS/. The United Nations Security Council will have an extraordinary meeting on Monday in connection with the deterioration of the crisis in Ukraine.
The meeting was planned for 15:00 New York time, a source at the British representative office told TASS.
Last Saturday’s shelling incident in Mariupol will be in the focus of the discussion. According to updated reports, the shelling killed 30 people and wounded 95.
The discussion of a reaction of the Security Council continued throughout Saturday.
No consensus was reached, since the British delegation insisted on condemnation of some statements of the Donbas militia, the press service of the Russian diplomatic representation said, noting that Western members of the Security Council during the Ukrainian conflict refused to discuss any statements and actions, sometimes very aggressive, of Kiev authorities.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in talks by phone with EU chief diplomat Federica Mogherini said it was necessary to conduct an objective investigation with the OSCE participation into the recent shellings of Donetsk and Mariupol.
Lavrov reiterated that Russia assessed the developments as a result of Kiev’s policy to refuse to have a direct dialogue with Donetsk and Luhansk for the practical implementation of the Minsk agreements and to suppress the south-east by force, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
The last UN Security Council meeting over the situation in Ukraine was held on January 21. Russia and the United States during the meeting exchanged mutual accusations of interference in the Ukrainian crisis. Russian permanent representative to the UN Vitaly Churkin said the United States during the Ukrainian crisis played a destructive and, “if you call a spade a spade”, instigating role. US representative Samantha Power said Russia was trying to freeze the conflict in Ukraine.
