Russian parliament speaker hails breakthrough in Cuba’s relations with US

“It is just a milestone event for Cuba, it is a major event in international life,” Valentina Matviyenko said on Tuesday upon arrival at the Havana airport

HAVANA, January 14. /TASS/. Speaker of Russia’s Federation Council upper parliament house Valentina Matviyenko has hailed a breakthrough in Cuba’s relations with the United States and the release of the Cuban Five, also known as the Miami Five, who were kept in U.S. prisons on terrorism charges since 1998.

“It is just a milestone event for Cuba, it is a major event in international life,” she said on Tuesday upon arrival at the Havana airport, where she was welcomed by Vice President of the Cuban Council of Ministers Ricardo Cabrisas. Matviyenko said it was a victory of the Cuban people who “have not been forced to the knees to yield to the dictation of the United States by five decades of blockade and economic sanctions.”

“You know, not only Russia but the majority of world nations sided with Cuba and this firmness of the Cuban people and international solidarity have ultimately compelled the United States to change its position,” she said.

She thanked Cabrisas for his contribution to the development of the Russian-Cuban relations. “For Russia Cuba is not just a reliable partner but a big friend and strategic ally,” she underscored.
