KIEV, January 10. /TASS/. Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko and Latvia’s Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics spoke on Saturday about prospects for granting financial aid to Kiev, the presidential press service said.

“The minister [Rinkevics - eds. TASS] underscored that the EU has been working actively to comprehend what kind of aid Ukraine needs and what is necessary for boosting competitiveness of the Ukrainian economy,” the statement said. “Also, Ukraine’s president and Latvia’s foreign minister discussed macro-financial assistance to Ukraine and extra opportunities for its allocation by the EU.”

Besides, the two men exchanged views on the situation in Donbass. In this context Poroshenko underscored the necessity of implementing the Minsk agreements.

A simplified visa regime between Ukraine and the European Union was also on the table.

“The Ukrainians are hopeful that visa-free travel to the EU will be introduced as a practical result of the Riga summit,” Poroshenko said. “It will be very symbolic.”.
