Austria’s chancellor cautions against new sanctions against Russia

VIENNA, December 20. /TASS/. Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann has cautioned against imposing new sanctions on Russia.

"We would be sawing off the branch we are sitting on if we erected a new wall to Russia's economy," Faymann told the Oesterreich newspaper on Saturday calling on the Europeans not rejoice in Russia’s economic troubles.

"I cannot approve of the euphoria of many in the EU over the success of sanctions against Russia. I see absolutely no cause for celebration. I do not know why we should be pleased if the Russian economy collapses," he said.

Along with this, he insists that earlier adopted restrictive measures against Russia were in place as “a self-defence step.”

“Our goal cannot be tightening the sanctions,” Faymann said.
