CHISINAU, December 12. /TASS/. The United States is seeking to draw Moldova into the anti-Russian alliance by imposing a major non-NATO ally status on it, Moldova’s Party of Socialists said in a statement on Friday.

The statement condemned Chisinau’s tacit reaction to this decision of the US Senate.

“We express a decisive protest against such 'allied relations' Washington is seeking to use to draw Moldova into the anti-Russian alliance,” the statement said. The party demanded this issue to be discussed at the first session of Moldova’s new parliament, as “the actions of the United States categorically run counter” to Moldova’s neutrality status fixed in its constitution.

On Thursday, the United States Senate passed the so-called Ukraine Freedom Support Act, a bill aimed at imposing additional sanctions against Russian and providing military support to Ukraine. The bill vests the US president with the right to provide military assistance to Kiev and impose sanctions against Russia’s big corporations. The document granted the US major non-NATO ally status to Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova.

Moldova’s Socialists say since this status implies military support, it might “have a negative impact on the settlement of the Transdniestria conflict and relations between Chisinau and Tiraspol.” The recent acceleration of Moldova’s cooperation with military political structures of the North Atlantic Alliance leads to the erosion of the country’s neutrality, they say, citing as an example Moldovan servicemen’s participation in NATO operations, their taking part in NATO drills, opening of a NATO information center at the Moldovan State University and a planned opening of NATO communications office in Chisinau.
