Fire on Russian nuclear submarine fully extinguished - shipyard

The dock has been flooded with water

MOSCOW, April 8. /TASS/. A fire and source of smoke onboard the Oryol nuclear submarine at the Zvyozdochka shipyard in northwestern Russia has been fully extinguished, an official spokesman for the shipyard has said.

"The burning of the rubber insulation in the area of ballast tank in the space between the outer and strong hull of the submarine’s afterbody has been completely extinguished," Evgeny Gladyshev said.

The spokesman said the dock has been flooded with water. The firefighters continue filling the scene with water, he added.

Russia’s Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Defence Ministry have set up a commission to investigate the circumstances of the accident and assess the damage, earlier reports said.

There were no armaments or fuel and lubrication materials onboard the submarine, and the nuclear reactor had been shut down long before the fire. As a result, there is no threat of environmental or radioactive contamination.
