New Russian nuclear-powered destroyer to have striking power of cruiser — Navy commander

The destroyer may get Caliber and Onyx cruise missiles, or their variations, along with the marine version of the S-500 anti-aircraft missile system

MOSCOW, March 2. /TASS/. Nuclear-powered destroyers built in Russia will have the striking power of a cruiser, Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy Admiral Viktor Chirkov told journalists on Monday.

Their deadweight will considerably surpass the parameters of its predecessors, Chirkov added.

"This destroyer will have a considerably greater deadweight that its predecessors of Project 956. The striking power of the new destroyer will be comparable to the striking power of a cruiser. The latest achievements of Russian military-industrial complex in the sphere of automatized control will be implemented in the project of the new destroyer," Chirkov said.

The project of the new destroyer, codenamed Leader, is under development at the Northern Design Bureau in St. Petersburg. It was reported earlier that the deadweight of the destroyer may be from 10,000 to 15,000 tons (of Project 956 destroyers - up to 8,000). The destroyer may get Caliber and Onyx cruise missiles, or their variations, along with the marine version of the S-500 anti-aircraft missile system. According to TASS sources, the fleet plans to receive 12 destroyers of the new type. A source in the military-industrial complex told TASS that the fist destroyer of this project can be expected no earlier than in 2023-2025.
