MOSCOW, February 9 /TASS/. UN peacekeepers may appear in eastern Ukraine theoretically but their deployment is not fitting into the logic of preparing the Minsk meeting of the leaders of Russia, Ukraine, Germany and France, Vitaly Churkin, Russia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, said in an interview with the Rossiya 24 TV news channel on Monday.
"If there is a need in the United Nations presence, theoretically it is certainly possible. There are schemes which can be used. There are countries, which can provide their forces," Churkin said.
"But all this requires a political solution, and today it is not apparent to me that such an option is being discussed and is fitting into the logic of preparations for the Minsk meeting," the Russian diplomat stressed.
US arms supplies to Ukraine
Churkin said the issue of weapons supplies to Ukraine by the United States depends on results of the Minsk summit on February 11.
"We see major pressure on the issue in the United States, especially in Congress. Angela Merkel is discouraging them from doing this. But this scenario will be unfolding depending on results of the Minsk talks," he said.
The Russian ambassador did not rule out such a scenario, warning about its danger.
"If the US following a request from the Ukrainian government starts supplying weapons to Kiev, it will violate a number of international documents," Churkin said.
"The US has repeatedly chosen a graded approach to rules of international law," the diplomat noted, saying this decision by the US could not be ruled out.
There could be no resolution of the UN Security Council on that issue, the UN ambassador said.
