Moscow to dwell on Red Army’s Oswiecim liberation at Holocaust remembrance week

Moscow government jointly with Russian Jewish Congress have organised a remembrance week for Holocaust casualties

MOSCOW, January 15. /TASS/. The history of Red Army’s liberation of prisoners of Nazi concentration camp Oswiecim 70 years ago will be presented in Russia’s capital Moscow at a remembrance week of Holocaust victims. From Thursday, January 15, until January 27 when the whole world marks the International Day of Remembrance of Holocaust Victims thematic meetings, excursions, book presentations and theatrical performances will be held in the Russian capital.

The Central Museum of the Great Patriotic War on the Poklonnaya Hill will be the main venue for lectures and conferences during the Holocaust remembrance week. An exhibition dedicated to Nazi death camp Auschwitz will open at the museum, Polish museum on Auschwitz-Birkenau provided exhibits for this exposition. Russian Jewish Congress will hold a memorial requiem evening at the museum on January 26. Moscow young people will meet former inmates of Nazi concentration camps. Memorial prayer Kaddish will be chanted at Moscow synagogues on January 27.

Moscow government and the Russian Jewish Congress have organized a remembrance week for Holocaust casualties.

The UN General Assembly instituted the International Day of Remembrance for Holocaust Victims. On January 27, 1945, Soviet troops have liberated prisoners of concentration camps in southern Poland. More than 200 Soviet soldiers and officers were killed in the battles for freeing the death camp and neighbouring town Oswiecim.

From 1.5 to two million people of different nationalities died at the death camp, including around 15 thousand Soviet citizens, were killed in Auschwitz-Birkenau.
