Ukraine cuts off power supplies to Crimea again — Crimea’s energy ministry

Power cuts started on Wednesday when Ukraine ceased power deliveries to the peninsula without any notifications

SIMFEROPOL, December 26. /TASS/. Without warning, Ukraine cut off power supplies to Crimea on Friday for the second time in a row this week, Crimea’s Fuel and Energy Minister Sergey Yegorov told TASS.

Ukraine lowered power from 650 to 400 megawatts, later - to 180MW and then cancelled the supplies totally, according to him.

Yegorov said he had no information on causes for the shortages.

At the time of reporting, Crimea’s domestic generation is working at maximum capacity.

On Wednesday, Ukraine cut off power supplies to Crimea for several hours. Head of the Black Sea peninsula Sergey Aksyonov called Kiev’s actions “an enemy’s sabotage.”

Since 19.00 Moscow time rolling blackouts hit the peninsula, where 2.2 million people live, as power had lowered to 400MW /40% of the republic’s needs/.

Blackouts have not affected power supplies to vital facilities in Crimea.

On Thursday morning, two accidents occurred at thermal power plants in the cities of Simferopol and Saki, which brought Crimea’s own generation down to 300-320MW. Residents were warned of possible introduction of rolling blackouts over power shortages.

Later in the day, the Saki thermal power plant resumed operation. But repairs are reported to continue at the Simferopol thermal plant.

Yegorov said that power consumption in the peninsula in peak hours totaled 1,000 MW.
