Advanced nuclear submarine Knyaz Suvorov to be laid at Sevmash shipyard

This is a third submarine laid in modified project 955A and a fifth Borei-class submarine model, taking into account submarines Yury Dolgoruky and Alexander Nevsky built under original project 955

SEVERODVINSK, December 25. /TASS/. Borei-A-type strategic nuclear submarine Knyaz Suvorov will be laid at the Sevmash military shipyard in northern Russian city of Severodvinsk, the ship-building plant told TASS.

Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin and Russia’s Navy Chief Commander Admiral Viktor Chirkov are expected to attend the keel-laying ceremony.

Knyaz Suvorov is a third submarine laid in modified project 955A and a fifth Borei-class submarine model, taking into account submarines Yury Dolgoruky and Alexander Nevsky built under original project 955.

Borei-type nuclear submarines should make backbones of Russian marine strategic nuclear forces for decades to come. Eight Borei vessels are planned to be built by 2020. Each submarine will carry 16 intercontinental ballistic missiles Bulava.

Project 955 Borei-class lead missile carrier Yury Dolgoruky and first serial submarine Alexander Nevsky built at Sevmash were already handed to Russian Navy. Submarines Knyaz Vladimir and Knyaz Oleg laid in 2012 and 2014, respectively, are being built under modernized project 955A at the shipyard.
