Russian diplomat calls for publishing all information on torture at US security prisons

The United States has not only violated its international commitments but also the principles and norms in the field of human rights and banned methods of torture, Russian human rights ombudsman says

MOSCOW, December 24 /TASS/. Konstantin Dolgov, the Russian Human Rights Ombudsman for Human Rights, Democracy and Rule of Law, called for publishing thousands of pages of information on torture at US prisons.

"A torture report (on torturing inmates by US security services) contains slightly over 500 pages which have been declassified. Thousands of pages remain secret, and one can only guess what is contained in them,” Dolgov said in an interview aired by the Rossiya-24 TV news channel on Wednesday.

“The world community should seek that Washington publish all the truth. The United States has not only violated its international commitments but also the principles and norms in the field of human rights and banned methods of torture,” Dolgov said.

“Representatives of the US intelligence community and security services who tortured inmates went as far as threatening their families, including children,” the Russian Foreign Ministry human rights ombudsman stressed.

“This theme will certainly be part of international discussions in many cases thanks to our demands. It cannot sink into oblivion, and this is exactly what Washington is trying to do,” the Russian diplomat stressed.

Dolgov also added that the administration of US President Barack Obama had not lived up to its promise to shut down the Guantanamo prison. The Russian diplomat said he feared that people guilty of brutal treatment of the Guantanamo inmates would be able to avoid punishment.

“There are all grounds to fear that Washington will try to fudge the issue and turn a page as officials in Washington like to say,” the diplomat stressed.
