Rolling blackouts start in Crimea because of restricted energy supplies from Ukraine

For the moment, the maximum power flow from Ukraine is 400MW, Crimea’s Fuel and Energy Minister Sergey Yegorov says

SIMFEROPOL, December 24 /TASS/. Rolling power black outs started in Crimea at 19:00 Moscow time (16:00 GMT) on Wednesday because of restricted energy supplies from Ukraine, Crimea’s Fuel and Energy Minister Sergey Yegorov told TASS on Wednesday.

“The first rolling power blackouts started in Crimea at 19:00 Moscow time. For the moment, the maximum power flow from Ukraine is 400MW. We generate approximately 400 MW of electricity on our own,” the minister said.

Yegorov explained that rolling power blackouts suggest successive power cuts for consumers in various parts of the peninsula.

“First, the power is cut off at one section for several hours; the next section is cut off when power supplies resume to the previous section. If the generation and power flows are insufficient, emergency power cuts covering vast districts are introduced,” the Crimean fuel and energy minister said.

The minister promised that Crimean consumers would be left without electricity for no more than two hours on Wednesday.

Crimea had expected the power cuts to start at 19:00 Moscow time.

Ukraine cut off all power supplies in the Republic of Crimea and the federal city of Sevastopol from 11:20 Moscow time to 15:00 Moscow time on Wednesday.

The head of Crimea, Sergey Aksyonov, had described Ukraine’s actions as “enemy sabotage.”
