Russia's Baltic Fleet research vessel to set out on circumnavigation

ST PETERSBURG, August 18, /ITAR-TASS/. An oceanography research vessel, the Admiral Vladimirsky, will set out from Kronstadt on a round-the-globe voyage on Monday.

The research vessel will run across the Baltic, North, and Barents Seas, along the Northern Sea Route, across the Bering Sea, and the northern Pacific. The ship will transit through the Panama Canal and into the Atlantic Ocean, cross it and, upon passing through the English Channel, the sourthern part of the North Sea, Danish straits, will reenter the Baltic Sea, a report on the official website of the Russian Ministyr of Defence says.

During the voyage, the Admiral Vladimirsky will log 24,670 nautical miles and call at five Russian ports Murmansk, Dixon, Tiksi, Pevek, and Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky as well as at four foreign ones: Vancouver (Canada), Corinto (Nicaragua), Havana (Cuba), and Brest (France).

The vessel crew are to carry out comprehensive oceanogrphic research, gather data for and adjustment of sea navigation charts, guidebooks and manuals for navigation, and check up the operation of radio navigation systems.

The research vessel is expected toreturn to the registry port of Kronstadt in 125 days' time.

The Admiral Vladimirsky was built under Project 852 at the Polish Szczecin-based Barski Shipyard in 1975. The ship was named in honour of Russia's Black Sea Fleet Commander Lev Vladimirsky.
