Government approves instructions on ecological monitoring of Lake Baikal

MOSCOW, February 3. /TASS/. The Russian government has approved a resolution on an ecological monitoring of a unique ecological system of Lake Baikal, the Cabinet said on its official website. The resolution was signed by Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.

The document contains instructions on monitoring a unique ecological system of Lake Baikal, taking into account its unique environment, specified ecological zones and a special regime of economic activity on this territory which was specified by law.

The ecological monitoring shall be conducted by the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources, Agriculture Ministry, several federal agencies and services and executive bodies of power of Buryatia, the Baikal and Irkutsk regions, the resolution says.

Russia adopted a bill "On Protection of Lake Baikal" in 1999; an amended bill passed in 2014 specified that the order of state monitoring of an ecological system of Lake Baikal was to be determined by the Russian government, while earlier it had been determined by the authorized bodies of the executive power.
