Putin calls on lawmakers to turn down populism and refrain from steps harmful for economy

“Our economy will adapt to these conditions in any case, but it will need some time," Russian President Vladimir Putin said

MOSCOW, December 22. /TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday called on lawmakers to turn down populism and refrain from decisions that might undermine the basis of the national economy. He stressed that all social liabilities envisaged by Russian laws must be fulfilled.

“Our economy will adapt to these conditions in any case, but it will need some time. So, bearing in mind the fact that we will have to live through uneasy times both in the economy and in the social sphere, we must, first of all, act in a highly professional way, take timely and coordinated measures. Obviously, we must ensure all our social liabilities, but, first of all, those of them that are envisaged by the Russian law,” Putin said at a meeting with lawmakers from both houses of the Russian parliament.

“And I am calling on you not to act from positions of populism and refrain from decision that might undermine the basics of our economy, to keep it healthy and efficient. Only in this case, we will be able to guarantee that we will come out of any trials and will secure the interests of our citizens,” he said.

The president voiced support to the lawmakers’ initiative to enhance parliamentary control. He said he was confident that Russia would be able to overcome any hardships and its economy would inevitably get adapted to low energy prices and changes on the foreign markets. “The petrodollar, the oil and gas market will be inevitably adjusted too, because the global economy will grow in any case, and now global companies are cutting their investments in oil and gas production. So, sooner or later, the situation will develop in a way it should — energy sources will become scarce again,” he said.

Putin underscored that consumer countries were fully aware of that and they were not interested in extremely low energy prices, they were rather interested in global companies investing in promising projects.
