Russia receives Ukraine’s request for supply of 1,500 MW of electricity — energy minister

Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak declined to specify if Russia was ready to supply this volume of electricity to Ukraine

MOSCOW, December 8. /TASS/. Russia has received Ukraine’s request for the supply of 1,500 megawatts of electricity, Russian Energy Minister Aleksandr Novak told reporters on Monday.

“We have received from Ukraine a request for the supply of 1,500 megawatts. At present we are exporting 500 megawatts, in the reciprocal cross-flow of electricity. We get the zero balance in general. Now Ukraine wants us to expand our supplies to cover the deficit Ukraine is facing,” the minister said.

Novak refused to specify if Russia is ready to supply this volume of electricity to Ukraine.

On December 7, the Ukrainian government approved the proposal of the Ministry of Energy and Coal Industry and allowed to import electricity “to avoid rolling blackouts.” According to Ukrainian Energy and Coal Industry Minister Vladimir Demchishin, at present the government is considering the issue of covering the 10-percet national power system deficiency.

On Wednesday, Demchishin said that Russia and Ukraine continued talks on the possibility of Russian power supplies to the Ukrainian market and the decision on this issue could be made “any day.” “Talks on power imports are being held. I can say with assurance that this is a necessary step to balance power system in such a difficult situation, no matter how politically difficult this step is, it is a necessary step,” he said.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko ordered to study possibility of power imports from Russia in mid-November.
