Ukrainian government allows imports of electricity from neighbouring countries

The decision was taken “to prevent rolling blackouts”

KIEV, December 7. /TASS/. Ukraine’s government has allowed to import electricity from neighbouring countries, the press service of the ministry of energy and coal industry said on Sunday.

According to the ministry, the decision was taken “to prevent rolling blackouts.” The state-owned company Ukrinterenergo has been vested with the authority to import electricity.

“It has also been decided that the price is not to exceed the mean previous month’s tariff for electricity generating companies of heat plants set by the national commission in charge of state regulation in the areas of energy and utility services,” the ministry said in a release.

The government is looking at how to make up a ten-percent capacity deficit in the national energy system, said Ukrainian Minister of Energy and Coal Industry Vladimir Demchishin.

“As concerns blackouts, we do have a gap of about ten percent. We cannot receive additional capacities from Russia, Moldova and Europe due to various reasons - there are transmission constraints there, etc.,” he told the 1+1 television channel.
