Russia, Pakistan have great potential to develop trade, economy — lawmaker

The current state of trade and economic cooperation between Moscow and Islamabad does not correspond to the level of political relations between the two states, Pakistani lawmaker Marvi Memon says

ISLAMABAD, October 22. /TASS/. Russia and Pakistan have significant potential for expanding trade and economic cooperation in coming years, lawmaker Marvi Memon from the ruling party said on Wednesday.

The current state of trade and economic cooperation between Moscow and Islamabad does not correspond to the level of political relations between the two states, said Memon, who chairs the National Assembly's standing Committee on Information and Broadcasting.

“Bilateral trade amounts currently to almost $542 million,” she told TASS. “This certainly does not correspond to the real possibilities in this sphere which has significant potential for further growth in years to come.”

“I do not see any major obstacles to expanding trade and economic relations between our countries since Pakistan is one of the most attractive partners in this respect,” Memon said. “I am sure that Russian companies will appreciate the country’s current investment climate aimed at promoting mutually beneficial economic cooperation.”

“In this context, we are especially interested in boosting energy cooperation with Russia, although we also welcome Moscow’s active participation in other bilateral and multilateral projects,” she added.
