Over 4,000 domestic animals killed in Russia’s Trans-Baikal wildfires

According to preliminary data, 374 cows, over 3,200 goats and sheep, 22 pigs, 27 horses and 478 birds have been killed

CHITA, April 22. /TASS/. Over 4,000 cows, goats, sheep, horses and domestic birds have been killed in the wildfires raging in Russia’s Trans-Baikal Region, the regional Ministry of Agriculture informed TASS on Monday.

"According to preliminary data, 374 cows, over 3,200 goats and sheep, 22 pigs, 27 horses and 478 birds have been killed in the fires. Besides, some animals have scattered over the steppe, and their owners are currently looking for them," the ministry’s press service informed.

The ministry is currently determining the overall damage caused by the fire in order to provide compensations for farmers.

On April 19 and 20, seventeen settlements were affected by the steppe fires in the south and southeast of the Trans-Baikal region. The fire destroyed 109 buildings and facilities. The number of residents who lost their homes, other property, or suffered in any way during the fires exceeded 400 people. Twenty-nine people received various injuries, four of them are in serious condition. A state of emergency has been declared in the region.
