UN chief hopes those responsible for blasts in Sri Lanka will be brought to justice

Antonio Guterres expressed his condolences to the families of those killed in the attacks and wished a soonest recovery to those injured

MOSCOW, April 21. /TASS/. /TASS/. United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres has expressed the hope that those behind a series of Sunday’s terror attacks in Sri Lanka will be swiftly found and brought to justice, his spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric said in a statement.

"The Secretary-General is outraged by the terrorist attacks on churches and hotels in Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday, a sacred day for Christians around the world. He recalls the sanctity of all places of worship. He hopes the perpetrators will be swiftly brought to justice," the statement says.

The UN Secretary General expressed his condolences to the families of those killed in the attacks and wished a soonest recovery to those injured.

"He commends the leadership demonstrated by the authorities and unity of the people of Sri Lanka in the wake of the attacks," Dujarric said. "The Secretary-General reiterates the support and solidarity of the United Nations with the people and the Government of Sri Lanka in this difficult moment for the nation."

A series of eight explosions in the island country during Easter celebrations on Sunday targeted churches, hotels and also an area close to the capital’s zoo and near Dematagoda, Colombo’s suburb. Most of the terror attacks were committed in the capital city of Colombo. As many as 215 people were reported to be killed and about 500 more were injured. No extremist group has claimed responsibility for the attacks.
