At least 28 dead as tourist bus crashes in Portugal — TV

The bus was transporting about 50 people

MOSCOW, April 18. /TASS/. At least 28 tourists, most of them German citizens, were killed in a bus crash on Portugal’s island of Madeira on Wednesday evening, the SIC TV channel reported.

According to the agency, the tragedy claimed the lives of 11 men and 17 women. The bus was transporting tourists from Germany, accompanied by a local driver and tour guide, who were injured in the crash.

Meanwhile, Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was quoed as saying by AFP on Wednesday that all those killed in the crash were citizens of Germany.

According to local authorities, there were about 50 people on board the bus when it crashed at 18:30 local time (20:30 Moscow time) on Wednesday. The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals.

The Russian embassy in Portugal has requested information about the accident. Diplomats maintain contact with local authorities, the embassy said on its Facebook page.
