Moscow condemns NATO airstrike in Afghanistan that killed 13 civilians

The Russian Foreign Ministry noted that ten of those killed were minor children of the same family

MOSCOW, March 26. /TASS/. Moscow strongly condemns the international coalition’s airstrike in the Afghan province of Kunduz that claimed the lives of 13 civilians and calls for bringing those response to justice, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.

"We strongly condemn another crime committed by NATO troops on Afghan soil. We join the UN mission’s call for conducting a thorough investigation and demand that the perpetrators be brought to justice," the ministry stressed. "We are outraged by the fact that none of the previous incidents of this kind has never been investigated properly and no one got the punishment they deserved."

The Russian Foreign Ministry noted that ten of those killed in the airstrike were minor children who belonged to the same family. The fact that the airstrike was carried out amid negotiations between the US and the Taliban (outlawed in Russia) on ways of achieving a peaceful settlement in Afghanistan, makes it even more cynical, the ministry added. "We are certain that such outrageous acts postpone the beginning of the peace process in Afghanistan, lead to the population’s exasperation, its radicalization and the continuation of the war," the Foreign Ministry stressed.

It also recalled that NATO earlier carried out similar attacks in Afghanistan. In particular, on October 3, 2015, the US Air Force delivered an airstrike on a hospital operated by Doctors Without Borders in the Kunduz province, which killed 42 civilians and injured 37 others. "US President Barack Obama apologized for the incident at that time. However, the recent incident that occurred in practically the same area shows that the NATO command in Afghanistan has learned no lessons from the previous tragedy," the Russian Foreign Ministry stressed.
