Clashes erupt at women’s march in Kiev

Police officers escorted the procession to prevent possible provocations

KIEV, March 8. /TASS/. An ultra-right activist has been detained in the center of the Ukrainian capital where feminists were holding a women’s march, Ukraine’s NewsOne television channel said on Friday.

Clashes erupted between ultra-right activists and the police when several thousand people had gathered in downtown Kiev for a procession marking the International Women’s Day. The nationalists attempted to impede the feminists’ march as they disagree with the women’s slogans and insist that core family values should prevail in society.

"We will decide on our own where to work, what to look like, what to wear, whether we should give birth or not, whether we should get married or not, how we should behave and so on," the march’s organizers wrote on Facebook.

The police were trying to push back the nationalists and detained some of them but later released.

After the clashes, the women continued the march carrying slogans calling for gender equality.

"We are of different ages, of different beliefs and all walks of life. We belong to different social strata which makes us vulnerable to multiple discrimination and violence. Our voices should be heard and our demands should be met, while our rights should be equal," the feminist activists said.

Police officers escorted the procession to prevent possible provocations.
