At least four Turkish citizens killed in fire on board ships in Black Sea - ministry

A search operation for four more missing citizens continues, the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported

ANKARA, January 23. /TASS/. At least four Turkish citizens were killed in a fire on board two vessels in the Kerch Strait area, and a search and rescue operation continues for four more Turkish citizens, the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported on Wednesday.

"According to preliminary information, there were 16 Turkish citizens [on board two vessels;] eight of them were rescued and four died. A search operation for four more missing citizens continues," the ministry reported.

A fire broke out on board the Candy and Maestro ships on Monday beyond Russia’s territorial waters. According to preliminary information, the incident occurred when fuel was reloaded from one vessel to the other. There were 17 people on board the Candy, nine of them Turkish citizens and eight Indian citizens. There were 15 citizens onboard the Maestro, including Turkish and Indian citizens. Director of the Crimean Republican Center for Emergency Medicine and Medical Care Sergei Olefirenko told TASS earlier that "all 12 injured sailors were hospitalized to Kerch City Hospital 1 for inpatient treatment."

According to preliminary information, both ships are operated by the Turkish company Milenyum Denizcilik Gemi.
