Police haul away crowd of demonstrators outside Japanese Embassy in Moscow

On January 22, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is expected to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin

MOSCOW, January 22. /TASS/. The police have detained a few people, including Alexei Kornienko, a lawmaker from the Communist Party of the Russian Federation, who staged pickets outside the Japanese Embassy in Russia, a source in the law enforcement agencies informed TASS.

"A few dozen people gathered near the diplomatic mission’s building. The planned to discuss the situation around the Kuril Islands. Some of them were holding posters with slogans against the transfer of the islands to Japan. The police have detained Kornienko and a few more participants in the picket," the source said.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe who is paying a visit to Russia is due to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday. The talks are expected to focus on the expansion of trade and economic bilateral cooperation, along with a peace treaty, which Tokyo links to the Kuril Islands issue.
