Security Council Secretary demands tougher gun control after Kerch tragedy

Patrushev also called the tragedy "indicative in terms of ineffective organization" of preventive work among young people

NOVOSIBIRSK, October 24. /TASS/. Secretary of the Russian Security Council Nikolai Patrushev has called for stricter gun control following the tragedy in Kerch.

“By now it is obvious how crucial it is for the heads of Russia’s regions to guarantee sufficient safety and security at educational facilities. What’s more, the effectiveness of prevention and awareness work with young people needs to be enhanced, as do measures to improve educational and disciplinary efforts, along with tightening control over arms and ammunition," Patrushev said on Wednesday at a meeting in Novosibirsk.

He also called the tragedy "indicative in terms of ineffective organization" of precautionary efforts with young people.

On October 17, a rifle-wielding student went on a shooting spree and set off an explosion at the Kerch Polytechnic College in Crimea, killing 20 people. The attacker later turned the gun on himself and committed suicide. A criminal case was initially opened on terrorism charges, but was later reclassified as murder.
